I love Tolkien’s work, especially The Lord of the Rings trilogy. There are so many great characters in that story but one of my favorites is old Tom Bombadil. He is only mentioned briefly in the Fellowship of the Ring (the first book out of the 3) but he is so great. If I had to choose one Lord of the Rings character to be it would be him haha! He is full of joy, silliness and loves the forest!
Anyways, I had starting this watercolor painting as a simple forest landscape scene. But in the end it developed into the old forest with the wandering Withywindle running through it, and up on the hill Tom Bombadil can be seen running home to bring the fair Goldberry her water-lilies.
” Hey! Come merry dol! derry dol! My darling!
Light goes the weather-wind and the feathered starling.
Down along under Hill, shining in the sunlight,
Waiting on the doorstep for the cold starlight,
There my pretty lady is, River-woman’s daughter,
Slender as the willow-wand, clearer than the water.
Old Tom Bombadil water-lilies bringing
Comes hopping home again. Can you hear him singing?
Hey! Come merry dol! derry dol! and merry-o,
Goldberry, Goldberry, merry yellow berry-o!
Poor old Willow-man, you tuck your roots away!
Tom’s in a hurry now. Evening will follow day.
Tome’s going home again water-lilies bringing.
Hey! Come derry dol! Can you hear my singing? ”
Hope you enjoy!
